Author Q&A
Are you still learning as a writer? Every book is a learning experience. I’m on my fifteenth or sixteenth book and every one brings new challenges and space to grow. Taking notes from previous books, I always pick one topic to work with. Do I need to work on character depth? Does the grovel need to be better? Do I need to stop using exclamation marks so much, (I did, I really did). I’m also always learning from my team around me! My editor was literally schooling me on grammar last week so hopefully I can improve.
What are the biggest challenges you face as a writer? Time management – as a chronically ill woman, an animal rescuer, and a full-time author, I don’t get much sleep! Learning to prioritize my health and well-being when I enjoy my work has been difficult, and it’s still ongoing.
How do you put yourself in the mind of a reader? I was a reader for many years, a crazy, 400 books a year reader. Now I’m an author my pace has slowed slightly, but reading loads helps so much in keeping in tune with the mind of a reader.
What are you looking forward to most about Pascify? All the friends and readers! I’m going to be like a puppy with zoomies the entire day. Pascify is the kind of event where you can go all out with outfits and table set ups… and I do love a little planned chaos!
What is one thing people might not know about you? That I rescue rabbits! They are the most neglected creature in the UK and I have been passionate about them since I got my first rabbit, Biscoff, three years ago. Since then I’ve looked after multiple foster rabbits including a mama and her litter of newborn bunnies, rescued bunnies off the street and even had a few surrendered to me! It’s a lot of work, but so rewarding.
What trip is top of your bucket list? I should say something fancy like Japan, which is up there, but right now all I want is a cabin in the middle of the woods with nature, a hot tub, scrabble, and a bottle of wine.
If you woke up today in your favourite place (fictional or real), where would that be? As the diamond of the season, I wouldn’t mind waking up in the world of Bridgerton to be wooed. Preferably by Benedict, as he’s my favourite, but I also wouldn’t mind a Lord Debling…
What is the best piece of advice you were ever given? Not all advice is good advice. Go with your gut. No one knows you better than you. Trust yourself and take a shot.
