Liz Cain is a Nuclear Medicine Physicist by day, and an urban fantasy author by night.
Liz has loved reading her whole life, and becoming an author happened by chance when she jumped at the opportunity to help a friend tell a story that deserved to be told. It inspired her to follow her lifelong dream and now she is self-publishing her own kickass, no-nonsense FMCs who you’ll love.
Author Q&A
Which author did you aspire to be when you were growing up? K F Breene – I love her books, all her FMCs are kickass and confident. It was her writing that inspired me to think about writing my own stories down. I didn’t really know self publishing was a thing before I read her books.
What is it that most inspires you to keep writing? My love of it. The stories in my head make it a little crowded up there, and there’s nothing like getting the stories out. It can be an all out brawl with my characters fighting for attention, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I don’t think I could “not write”.
What has been your greatest achievement to date? Hitting publish on that first book. Imposter syndrome can be one hell of an obstacle, and there’s always that thought in your head that it’s never good enough. Ignoring that voice is the hardest thing I do each day.
Are you still learning as a writer? Yes, and I think I always will be. But that’s another part I love. Even now you get that sense of achievement when you add in a new skill.
What is the greatest lesson any writer can learn? Start writing. Don’t try to be perfect, you can always go back and fix bad writing but you can’t edit a blank page.
What are the biggest challenges you face as a writer? Time, and lack there of. I have a full time job, and now an 8 month old child (will be 11 months by PASCIFY). I worry that when I go back to work it’ll get worse, but I’ve always managed to make the time in the past. Now will be no different. Writing matters to me, and so I’ll make sure it happens.
How do you put yourself in the mind of a reader? I am a reader. Before I started writing I’d read anywhere from 300-400 books a year. Now I write, but I still read 76 books last year – thank god for audiobooks with a baby!
How do you think our relationship with literature has been impacted by modern times? When I was younger it wasn’t popular to read. Now, with social media, it’s easier to find books. My TBR is crying!!! But in a good way. The communities that I’ve seen are incredible, and events like these make it even more exciting.
What are you looking forward to most about Pascify? I can’t wait to see what it becomes. It sounds so different to any other event I’ve done, and I’m excited to see how it turns out. With Sarah at the helm, you know it’s going to be incredible.
What is one thing people might not know about you? I’m pretty open about myself, so I’m not sure there is something I haven’t blabbed in one interview or another. I have no filter, so what you see is what you get really…I can’t stand the smell of rice pudding. If anyone is eating it I can’t be in the same room.
What trip is top of your bucket list? Canada, taking a train through the Rockies. We’ve been slowly ticking off our bucket list. I’ve been to Australia, a lot of Europe, Thailand, and toured national parks in the US, plus Iceland. I guess another one is Japan. I’d love to try sushi there.
If you woke up today in your favourite place (fictional or real), where would that be? My bed. It’s very comfy and regularly traps me…Okay, in all serious Orlando. We love going to Disney, and I can’t wait to take our little one later this year with her grandparents. She won’t remember it, but we will and my in-laws will.
If you could choose any other profession, what would that be? Tomb Raider – I always wanted to be Lara Croft, or Indiana Jones
Is there a particular genre or type of non-fiction that you most enjoy reading? All fantasy. My taste is pretty much across the board when it comes to sub genres, as long as it’s fantasy I’ll read it. When I read contemporary, I do enjoy it, but I wonder when the MC is going to find out she’s a secret witch or the heir to an incredible power.
What is the best piece of advice you were ever given? Not everyone will enjoy what you write, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
