Hattie Jacks is a British author of steamy sci-fi romance. She loves to write about super hot alpha aliens and the feisty human ladies who are not prepared to accept their fate. Unless fate tells them to lose their hearts…
Author Q&A
Which author did you aspire to be when you were growing up? Douglas Adams, but also Jilly Cooper, ultimately, I compromised and became (sort of) both!
What is it that most inspires you to keep writing? My readers! They turn up for me, send me the loveliest of emails and messages. It helps I have a head full of ideas which just won’t quit too.
What has been your greatest achievement to date? Becoming a USA TODAY Bestselling Author as part of an anthology with a group of simply amazing Sci-Fi Romance authors. It was truly a privilege to work with them to achieve this list.
Are you still learning as a writer? Oh yes, very much and with each and every book, which, as I write a book approximately every 6 weeks, is a lot of lessons.
What is the greatest lesson any writer can learn? Just write, and write like no one is reading, write for yourself, write because the voices in your head won’t stay quiet, but whatever you do…write.
What are the biggest challenges you face as a writer? I feel like I’m the biggest imposter every single day. Part of me is constantly expecting I’ll be ‘found out’ and then I’ll have to go back to the day job. Silencing that voice is, and probably always will be, the hardest part of being a writer for me.
How do you put yourself in the mind of a reader? It’s pretty easy, because I am also a reader too! I write what I love to read.
How do you think our relationship with literature has been impacted by modern times? I sometimes worry we are becoming too polarised as a community of writers and readers. Ebook or physical book, genre fiction vs literary fiction, indie or trad. There is so much choice out there other than reading, we need to pull together to make sure it remains something everyone can do.
What are you looking forward to most about Pascify? I can’t wait to meet lots of brand new readers and bring them over to reading spicy sci-fi romance.
What is one thing people might not know about you? I used to be a falconer. And for fans of AATA, I attended the laying of the foundation ceremony of the Armories with the falconry centre who were part of the original set up.
What trip is top of your bucket list? A round Europe road trip.
If you woke up today in your favourite place (fictional or real), where would that be? Boot in Eskdale, Cumbria. Such a beautiful, peaceful place.
If you could choose any other profession, what would that be? This is my second profession, so I’ve already done the other one 😉
Is there a particular genre or type of non-fiction that you most enjoy reading? If I’m not reading romance, I love a good crime novel by LJ Ross.
What is the best piece of advice you were ever given? To be yourself, because there is only ever one you.
